Options for ashes

Deciding what to do with your loved one’s ashes can be a very difficult decision, particularly if this has never been discussed before. You must make sure you are not rushing your decision, as often this is final, and either cannot be undone or can be difficult to undo.

There’s a range of choices within our grounds and our Bereavement Services Team are here to help you.

Cremated remains graves are located in Taunton Cemetery and can hold up to four caskets. A memorial headstone is placed on top, and you can choose to have a Lawn Headstone or a Desktop Tablet memorial.

You will need to purchase the Exclusive Right of Burial for either 75 or 100 years depending on your preference, and this gives you the right to decide who is interred in this grave and what is added to the headstone. It also gives you the right to be interred in the grave after your passing. We strongly recommend two people are nominated as the owners of the Rights, as these do not automatically transfer to anyone after the owner has died. After the lease period, the rights return to the council.

You may wish to visit the Bereavement Services Office in advance to choose your preferred location and the team will be happy to assist you.

To purchase the Exclusive Right of Burial, you will need to complete this Application Form and return it to Bereavement Services with payment.

The owner will also need to provide a Notice of Interment Application Form giving permission for the grave to be opened. This will need to be received 3 working days before an intended interment date.

The Garden of Rest is a large, open landscape in the Crematorium grounds. Ashes can be interred here on their own or with loved ones. A small grave is prepared, and the ashes are loosely interred (no caskets or urns are used).

Records are kept to show the general area of any interment, but it is not possible to identify the exact location of individual cremated remains.

The Garden of Rest provides a focal point for visitors and the ground is not marked by a memorial. This allows the lawn to be kept clear. It is possible to have an interment behind a memorial tablet, or next to an existing tree. It is also possible to have ashes interred within the garden if the cremation did not take place at Taunton Crematorium.

Cut flowers only are to be left on the garden itself, but there are a number of memorials available to purchase to place on the outskirts of the garden.

If you decide to witness an interment, a member of our Crematorium staff can conduct a short service at the graveside for you. Please contact the Bereavement Services Team to arrange a suitable date and time for the service to take place. If you don’t want to witness the interment, please let your funeral director or the Crematorium office know, and this can be arranged without you being present. You can choose the location of the grave, but you would need to do so a couple of days before the interment takes place.

If you wish to arrange for an interment in the Garden of Rest, either witnessed or unwitnessed, you will need to complete and return a Notice of Interment Application Form to the Bereavement Services Team, 3 working days before the arranged date.

The woodland memorial walkway has been created for the placement of ashes within a natural environment in a different area of the Crematorium, and to create additional natural habitats for the variety of wildlife that live within our grounds.

Interments are permitted within a range of urns or caskets made from natural materials available on the market or can be scattered in a designated scatter section.

To maintain this area in its natural environment, a limited range of memorials and above ground vaults can be supplied, and the area will be maintained as required during the year.

Planting of bulbs and wildflowers is encouraged at the time of an interment to mark the area as we are unable to permit other memorial items. This is to keep the area natural, tidy and respectful toward other families, friends and wildlife who visit here.

If you wish to arrange for an interment in the Garden of Rest, either witnessed or unwitnessed, you will need to complete and return a Notice of Interment Application Form, and return this 3 working days before the arranged date.
