Temporary closure of East Street consultation

The current temporary closure of East Street to all vehicles except cycles was initiated as a joint response from SWT and Somerset County Council (SCC) working with the police and other partners, to enable social distancing and encourage walking and cycling in line with the first round of Active Travel funding to support the re-opening of high streets.

Unfortunately there was not time to consult with the public prior to the temporary closure, so the online consultation, which ran from 10 Sept for two weeks, provided an opportunity ahead of the further funding announcement to give everyone a chance to have their say on the perceived benefits or issues created.

It is important to remember that this was a consultation on the extension of the temporary closure not any possible permanent scheme.

Results of the East Street consultation

Following the results, alongside other feedback from traders, residents and shoppers, if the scheme is extended SWT, working in partnership with SCC, will create additional Blue Badge holder bays in key town centre streets and some car parks. In tandem, it is proposed to implement a timed closure of East Street to allow greater traffic movement during peak travel times, integrating new street furniture and cycle storage into the scheme.
