Downsizing to a smaller property

Downsizing to a smaller home more suitable to your housing need is likely to be cheaper to run and maintain, with cheaper bills and charges such as rent, Council Tax and utilities. The combination of these reduced costs could contribute to you having more money to spend on other things.

Additionally by freeing up a larger property you will be helping other families’ to be housed in a much needed home.

You can downsize your home in the following ways:

  • Using Homefinder Somerset to express an interest in a property, this can be county-wide, not just within our housing stock. Log on to Homefinder Somerset to find out more.
  • By completing a mutual exchange either with other Somerset West and Taunton tenants or a tenant from another housing association or local authority. To find out more check out our webpage for Mutual exchange or home swap, but also you can log on to Homefinder Somerset.

The Council operates an incentive scheme to assist tenants who are downsizing - this could mean that you’re eligible for a grant of up to £2,000 paid following a successful move.

For more information and to see if you’re eligible, check out the Transfer Removal Grant Scheme webpage on this site.
