Right to buy
The right to buy (RTB) scheme gives most council tenants the chance to buy their home at a discount.
You probably have the right to buy if you:
- are living in a council property
- have been a council or housing association tenant for the last three years
To check your eligibility and for more information check the Government right to buy website.
Under right to buy you can buy your council home at a price lower than the full market value. This is because the time you’ve been a tenant qualifies you to a discount. You should get independent legal and financial advice about your own circumstances before you decide to buy your home. It’s a big commitment.
