Taxi and private hire licensing

We are responsible for licensing hackney carriages (more commonly known as ‘taxis’) and private hire vehicles that operate in Somerset West and Taunton. We also licence their drivers.

Although Taunton Deane Borough Council and West Somerset Council has come together to form a new council: Somerset West and Taunton, there are currently still two separate taxi and private hire licensing areas, with separate policies, licence conditions and fare tariff.

Licensed vehicles can be identified by council licence plates, bearing either the Taunton Deane or West Somerset logo, which are displayed on the back of the car. Licensed drivers are identified by a photographic ID badge, which they wear.
