Design Guide Consultation Underway
05 February 2020 : Council news
SWT are consulting on a draft Design Guide to ensure consistency in the quality of new developments across the District.
The consultation runs until Monday 30 March with a view to adopting the districtwide Design Guide as a Supplementary Planning Document.
The Guide seeks to encourage a higher standard of design for development across the whole Local Planning Authority area, and reflects Taunton’s status as a Garden Town.
It will ensure the level of housing growth needed to meet future demand in Somerset West and Taunton is high quality, sustainable, and maintains or enhances the character and distinctiveness of the area.
The draft Design Guide is in two parts: - the core Design Guide which sets out the policy context and generic design guidance, and Design Supplements which provide detailed advice on a specific type of development.
As well as promoting a common approach to the main principles which underpin our Local Plans, it will also provide planning committee members and officers with the tools to refuse consent for poor design.
Cllr Mike Rigby, Executive Member for Planning Policy and Transport, said: “The Design Guide reflects the Council’s commitment to deliver significant new housing growth focused on a number of new communities as well as a regenerated town centre for Taunton.
It sets out our principles of place making and sustainability and how these can be implemented to produce resilient, healthy, safe and attractive places to live and work with green spaces and green credentials.
We are very keen for people to engage with this consultation process which will help to guide planning decisions for large and small scale housing developments around the district.”
