Firepool information event

29 October 2019 : Planning and development

SWT is holding an information event to show how work is progressing on the Firepool masterplan.

Proposals for the regeneration of Firepool were approved by the Council in June outlining a framework for delivering the site in blocks for specific uses.

The event at Deane House, Taunton, on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 November will give people the opportunity to view progress so far and make comments.

Conceptual drawings and information will be on display with supporting material including:

  • A brief history of the site and previous work
  • Site context taking into account factors such as flood levels, transport, and utilities
  • Details of the block by block approach to developing the site, including potential uses
  • The timeline for proposals

SWT staff will be on hand to talk people through the plans and answer any questions. They will also be encouraging people to provide feedback in writing.

Executive Member for Economic Development, Cllr Marcus Kravis, said: “We are making progress on the masterplan for Firepool and would like to share this with the public.

There are lots of different things to consider for this important site and we are keen to hear people’s opinions and suggestions.

We want to deliver a financially sustainable scheme that attracts growth and investment but also creates an enjoyable space that reflects our Garden Town status. It’s important to involve our community in that process.”

Part of the site has already been brought back in to temporary use with a grassed area and footpath.

A boulevard will be created as part of the scheme which will be the main link between the town centre and the train station.

The Council has appointed a professional design team to produce a masterplan which will be used as part of a new Local Development Order to simplify the planning process.

SWT is still firming up the details of the scheme and will use feedback from the event to help develop the proposal further with a report to Full Council expected in December.

It will publish the information online after the event, so it can be accessed by anyone who is unable to attend and there will be additional information events in the New Year.

The Firepool Information Event will take place at Deane House, Belvedere Road, Taunton, between 2pm and 8pm on Monday 4 November, and 2pm and 6pm on Tuesday 5 November.
