Preparing a Place Plan for Wellington
07 October 2022 : Council news, Community, Planning and development
Somerset West and Taunton Council is preparing a Place Plan for Wellington to inform future decisions about the development, regeneration and conservation of the town.
The Place Plan will look at potential options for future growth to support housing and employment needs: retail and commercial function; transport systems; culture and heritage.
When adopted it will be a long-term strategy that will inform the future Somerset-wide Local Plan as we move to a new unitary authority in April 2023.
The Council has commissioned consultants Allies and Morrison, Avison Young, and LUC to prepare the Place Plan including a Vision, Spatial Framework, and Infrastructure and Implementation Plan.
Cllr Mike Rigby, Executive Member for Planning and Transport, and Economic Development, said: “Wellington is a thriving market town with significant employment, retail and leisure offerings.
“It’s important that we create a holistic framework for the town that will explore aspirations and identify possible areas for growth that will not only allow Wellington to continue to thrive in the future but will contribute to its unique sense of place.
“I would encourage anyone with an interest in their town and how they think it should look in the future to have their say.”
SWT is seeking the views of the community through a series of engagement activities and workshops:
20 October, 11am to 3pm - pop-up event at the Wellington Quaker Meeting House, High Street, Wellington
20 October, 5.30pm to 7pm - Community Stakeholder Workshop for Wellington Town councillors and key stakeholder representatives (by invitation)
10 - 21 October - school engagement activities
There will also be workshops for Somerset West and Taunton Council and Somerset County Council members.
An online questionnaire is also running from 10 to 21 October for a wider audience and can be found at
Somerset West & Taunton - Citizen Space
The draft Place Plan will be subject to statutory consultation in January 2023; and is intended for adoption at Full Council in March 2023.
