Streetwise support for the homeless

20 March 2020 : Community, Council news

SWT’s Streetwise team is calling on volunteers to help ensure our most vulnerable members of society are supported during the Coronavirus emergency.

The team works with partners including the Salvation Army and Open Door to support rough sleepers and the homeless with daytime services and night time accommodation.

It also signposts people in need to the Taunton Foodbank who provide emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis.

Many of the volunteers at these organisations fall into the vulnerable group who are being advised to self-isolate by the Government.

This is leaving a shortfall in numbers of people who can keep these vital services running at the time of greatest need.

SWT’s Executive Member for Community, Cllr Chris Booth, said: “There has already been an amazing response to this unprecedented crisis from people throughout our community.

I know there are many people out there who are keen to do what they can to help and I am extremely grateful to every one of them.

The Charities that work with us to provide services for the wellbeing of our rough sleeper and homeless community will suffer due to the substantial loss of volunteers during this challenging time. I would urge anyone who is able to volunteer to offer their help, no matter how small.”

Full training will be given to anyone who is eligible to help.
