SWT will be carrying out surveys at the Crescent Car Park in Taunton next week ahead of a major refurbishment.
Sections of the car park will be closed while the detailed surveys take place to establish the topography of the site and the location of utilities in preparation for the scheduled works.
The south side of the car park will be closed from 5am to 10am on Wednesday 29 September and the north side of the car park will be closed between 5am and 10am on Thursday 30 September.
The car park will reopen fully at 10am on both days but the survey work will continue on the roads within it. This will include lifting drain covers and jetting drainage runs.
The work is being carried out by a team from Solum SW Ltd – specialists in surveying services who are used to working around early deliveries and vehicle movements to minimise the impact on shoppers and businesses.
The survey team will follow COVID-secure working practices and cordon off areas to work in isolation. Appropriate signage will be in place.
Cllr Mike Rigby, Executive Member for Planning and Transport, said: “The Crescent car park is in need of major refurbishment and upgrading to make it a parking option of choice for people coming into town for shopping and social activities and is a step towards achieving our Garden Town ambitions.
“The refurbishment will benefit our economy and the environment by making it a gateway car park for the town centre with the provision of electric vehicle charging points to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles in line with our commitment to work towards carbon neutrality by 2030.
“I would ask people to bear with us while we undertake this important survey work which is the first and an essential step upon which future designs will be informed.”
