Taunton maintains footfall figures
04 February 2020 : Council news
Taunton bucked the national trend and saw an increase in footfall over the festive period compared to 2018.
While footfall on UK High Streets was 3.5% down on the year before over Christmas, Taunton not only maintained its numbers but saw a slight increase of 0.3%.
The wide range of events taking place from November through to January resulted in healthy numbers for the town.
The Christmas lights switch on, the ice rink, Eat Christmas, and the festive markets all contributed to the increased footfall.
Taunton’s very own ice rink saw over 17,000 people take to the ice, and according to a recent survey, people travelled from as far as Cornwall to meet up with family and friends to skate.
Executive Member for Economic Development, Cllr Marcus Kravis, said: “Despite the national picture of falling footfall figures, Somerset West and Taunton Council really pulled out all the stops to make Taunton a regional festive destination.
“Key staff worked extremely hard to ensure the festive offer was a success and I would like to thank them for their superb effort. I am delighted with the success of the Ice Rink and the footfall figures. Our aim is to see these figures to continue to improve throughout 2020.”
